History: The Grand Theatre

In the spring of 2012, a new opportunity for growth arose for journeychurch. Pastors Tom and Terrie Wallace led their congregation to a vacant theater building in the heart of Surfside Beach that had formerly been the home of Carolina Opry and Legends In Co. For the remainder of the year, through the work of volunteers, the church operated a theater with four house shows and nearly a dozen special event concerts. And every Sunday, the church continued to take center stage. Through the combined efforts and dedication of both entities, the church nearly doubled in size. At that point, a decision was made to allow the theater business to fade so that the work of the church could remain front and center.

In 2012, we were happy to be the home theatre for Aloha Y’all (straight from the Polynesian Islands), Grand Illusions (which gave Brandon & Hannah Wagster their start in Myrtle Beach), and C&H Productions’ The Marvelous Wonderettes and Dino’s TV Variety Show, which retired at the end of a memorable season here after years of delighting audiences in the Grand Strand.

We also hosted special events presented by The Isaacs, Russ Taff, Francesca Battistelli, Sue Duffield, & the area’s own Steve “Garth” Fairchild.

If you were with us for any of the wonderful shows and events that took place under the banner of The Grand Theatre, we thank you… and we invite you to come and worship with us any Sunday or Wednesday!
